The first touch is the foundation of football. A good first touch gives you time and space; a bad first touch leads to losing the ball. Dennis Bergkamp, Zinedine Zidane, and Andrea Pirlo are known as players with the best first touches.

Types of First Touch

With the inside of the foot: The most commonly used method. When the ball arrives, align the inside of your foot with the ball and direct it in the desired direction. Pulling the foot back slightly cushions the speed of the ball.

With the outside of the foot: Used during fast movements. The ball can be directed forward in a single touch.

Under the sole: Stopping the ball under the sole is the safest method. However, it is slower because the ball remains in one spot.

With the chest: Receiving a ball coming through the air with the chest and bringing it down to the feet.

With the thigh: Softening a high ball with the thigh to bring it down to the feet.

Secrets of a Good First Touch

1. Scan ahead: Look around BEFORE the ball arrives โ€” it is important to know where you need to direct it.

2. Prepare your body: Adjust your body position in advance according to the direction of the ball.

3. Soften the foot: Pull your foot back slightly upon contact to absorb the speed of the ball โ€” this creates a 'soft' touch.

4. Oriented toward the next move: The first touch should serve the next action โ€” a pass, a shot, or dribbling.

Training Methods

Wall passes: Hit the ball against a wall with varying force and control the returning ball on your first touch. Change direction after every 10 receptions.

Aerial balls: Throw the ball up and receive it using various methods: with the foot, chest, or thigh.

With a partner: A partner passes from different angles and with varying force, and you direct it in the required direction on your first touch.

15 minutes of first-touch practice every day will significantly improve quality within one month.
