Rondo is an exercise where several players form a circle and pass the ball to each other, while 1-2 players in the center try to intercept it. Barcelona has made this drill the foundation of its playing philosophy.
What is Rondo?
The simplest form: 4v1 or 5v2. The outer players try to pass the ball with one touch, while the center player attempts to intercept it. The player who loses the ball moves to the center.
Types of Rondo
4v1: Beginner level. 4 players pass the ball in a small square (5x5m), while 1 player tries to steal it.
5v2: Intermediate level. 5 on the outside, 2 in the center. This requires more pressing and faster decision-making.
6v3: Advanced level. A larger area with more players โ closer to real game situations.
Rondo + goal: After the outer players complete a certain number of passes, they can shoot at a mini-goal.
Positional rondo: Players stand in specific positions (defender, midfielder, attacker) โ this practices real game positioning.
Benefits of Rondo
First touch: Directing the ball correctly with one touch is one of the most important skills in football.
Quick decision: When the center player applies pressure, a quick decision must be made โ whether to pass, hold, or turn.
Positioning: The player without the ball must position themselves correctly โ opening up a passing lane for their teammate.
Pressing practice: The players in the center also benefit by learning pressing techniques.
How to get started?
Start every training session with 10 minutes of rondo. Begin with 4v1, then move to 5v2 and 6v3. Rule: do not allow more than two touches (advanced version โ one touch only).
When you book a pitch through Playmatch, arrive 15-20 minutes before the game and play rondo. This serves as both a warm-up and a technical exercise โ and it's very enjoyable!
