Breathing is an action we perform 20,000 times every day. However, during football, the correct breathing technique significantly increases efficiency. Many players hold their breath or breathe too rapidly during sprints β€” both of which are incorrect.

Diaphragmatic Breathing

Breathing with the diaphragm (belly) rather than the chest is the most effective method. The reason: diaphragmatic breathing allows 30% more air into the lungs, muscles receive more oxygen, and the heart rate becomes more stable.

Exercise: Lie on your back and place your hand on your stomach. When you inhale, your stomach should rise; when you exhale, it should fall. Practice for 5 minutes.

Breathing During Sprints

It is very important not to hold your breath during a sprint. Using a 2:2 or 2:1 rhythm is recommended:

- 2:2 rhythm: 2 steps inhaling, 2 steps exhaling

- 2:1 rhythm (intensive sprint): 2 steps inhaling, 1 step exhaling

This rhythmic breathing maintains a stable oxygen supply to the muscles.

Breathing During Running

For long-distance running (constant movement during the game), a 3:3 or 4:3 rhythm is suitable: 3-4 steps inhaling, 3 steps exhaling. Inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth is the ideal combination.

Recovery During Rest

For fast recovery during stops or halftime: place your hands on your knees and take deep breaths. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale in 6 seconds. Repeat 5-6 times β€” the heart rate will normalize quickly.

Breathing Exercises

Perform breathing exercises for 5-10 minutes every day:

1. Box Breathing: 4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold, 4 seconds out, 4 seconds hold. For 5 minutes.

2. Interval Breathing: 10 seconds fast breathing, 10 seconds slow breathing. For 3 minutes.

3. Single Nostril: Close the right nostril and breathe through the left, then switch. For 2 minutes.

These exercises increase lung capacity and improve endurance during the game.
