The 3-5-2 formation is a tactical scheme played with 3 defenders, 5 midfielders, and 2 forwards. Antonio Conte made this formation popular again by successfully implementing it at Juventus and Chelsea.

Structure of the 3-5-2 Formation

3 central defenders: All three defenders are positioned in the center. The middle defender (libero) should be the most experienced member of the team β€” they manage the defense.

2 wing-backs: They perform both defensive and offensive roles. They run along the entire line on the left and right β€” this position requires the most energy.

3 central midfielders: One of them is defensive (DMF), while two participate actively in the attack.

2 forwards: Two classic attackers β€” one focuses on the goal, while the other comes from depth.

Advantages

Numerical superiority in the center β€” the middle is locked down with 3 defenders and 3 midfielders. Utilizing width through wing-backs. Constant pressure on the opponent's defense with two forwards.

Disadvantages

Wing-backs must run a great deal β€” if they tire, the flanks remain open. With 3 defenders, it can be difficult against fast attackers compared to having 4 defenders.

Application in 5x5 and 7x7

This formation can be adapted for small pitches: 1-2-2 (1 defender, 2 mid, 2 attack) in 5x5, and 2-3-1 or 1-3-2 in 7x7. The main idea is preserved β€” numerical superiority in the center and utilizing the wings.
