One of the biggest mistakes amateur footballers make is entering a game without warming up. Excuses like 'there's no time' or 'I'm young โ I don't need it' end in injury. Statistics show that players who play without warming up are 5 times more likely to suffer muscle injuries.
What happens when you play without warming up?
Muscle strain: The most common occurrence. The hamstring muscle tears when sprinting while cold. Recovery: 2-6 weeks.
Ligament sprain: Ankle and knee ligaments are weak when cold. They can stretch or tear during a sharp turn. Recovery: 2-12 weeks.
Muscle spasms (cramping): Muscles locking up in the second half of the game is a sign of muscles that weren't properly warmed up.
Achilles tendon injury: One of the most severe injuries. A rupture of the Achilles tendon requires 6-12 months for recovery.
Correct Warm-up Program (15 minutes)
0-5 minutes: Light jogging. Slow pace, regulating breath.
5-8 minutes: Dynamic stretching โ leg swings forward and backward, high knees, side steps.
8-12 minutes: Acceleration โ short sprints at 50%, 70%, and 90% speed.
12-15 minutes: With the ball: short passes, dribbling, light shots.
Post-Game Cool Down (10 minutes)
0-3 minutes: Slow walking โ allowing the heart rate to return to normal.
3-10 minutes: Static stretching โ stretch each muscle for 20-30 seconds. Quads, hamstrings, inner thighs, calves, lower back โ all of them.
Difference Between Winter and Summer
Warming up is even more critical in winter โ cold muscles are stiffer and more prone to injury. Increase warm-up time to 20 minutes in winter. Do not skip warming up in summer either โ while muscles heat up faster in hot weather, the risk of dehydration increases.
Arrive 20 minutes early for games booked via Playmatch. This 15-minute warm-up is the best investment, because a 2-week injury is too high a price to pay for the pleasure of one game!
