Receiving a ball in the air is a fundamental skill that every football player must know. Chest control is the most common and effective method because the chest provides the widest surface area of the body.

Basic Technique

Body Position: Feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Align your chest with the direction from which the ball is coming.

Arms: Spread to the sides for balance. The arms must not touch the ball!

Breathing: Exhale upon impact and pull your chest slightly inward โ€” this dampens the speed of the ball and ensures it drops closer to your feet.

Ball Contact: The ball should hit the upper part of the chest โ€” the muscular area above the ribs. If it hits too low, it can cause pain in the stomach.

Types of Chest Control

Directing Downwards: Leaning the chest slightly forward to drop the ball down toward the feet. This is the most frequently used type.

Directing Sideways: Rotating the body to direct the ball to the left or right. This allows you to escape from an opponent.

Lifting Upwards: Pulling the chest back to pop the ball upward โ€” typically used for a volley shot.

Risky Situations

The biggest risk in chest control is the ball hitting the arm. This is judged as a handball and results in a free kick. Therefore, always keep your arms spread to the sides and away from the ball.

Training Methods

Self-Practice: Throw the ball up, receive it with your chest, and drop it to your feet. 20 repetitions, 3 sets.

With a Partner: A partner throws the ball into the air from 5-10 meters; you receive it with your chest and control it on the first touch. 15 repetitions, switching roles.

On the Move: While running, a partner sends a long pass, and you continue by receiving it with your chest.

Try to apply this technique in Playmatch games โ€” especially when the goalkeeper or defender provides a long pass.
