Football is not just a game of feet and strength โ€” it is a game of the mind. The wider a player can see the field and the better they can hear surrounding sounds, the better decisions they will make. Peripheral vision and sensory skills can be trained.

Peripheral (Wide) Vision

An average person's viewing angle is around 120 degrees. Professional footballers have an effective viewing angle closer to 180 degrees. This allows them to see teammates and opponents on the sides even while looking at the ball.

Vision Exercises

1. Finger Exercise: While facing forward, spread both arms to the sides. Move your fingers and identify the movement using peripheral vision. Gradually spread your arms wider.

2. Head-Up Exercise: While dribbling, lift your head every 2 seconds and read numbers on a wall or board. This forms the habit of scanning the surroundings even when focused on the ball.

3. Numbered Cones: Attach numbers to cones. Dribble and move toward the numbered cone called out by the coach. This increases visual processing and decision speed.

Auditory Attention

Vocal communication is crucial in football: 'Behind you!', 'Time!', 'Left!' โ€” these sounds must be heard and reacted to immediately.

Exercise: While blindfolded, move toward a sound coming from different directions. 2-3 teammates clap from various sides โ€” the blindfolded player runs toward the source of the sound.

Eye-Hand Coordination

This skill is especially important for goalkeepers, but beneficial for all players. Throwing and catching a tennis ball against a wall or distinguishing and catching different colored balls are simple exercises that improve coordination.

Training Schedule

Perform 10-minute sensory exercises 2-3 times a week. These exercises do not cause physical fatigue, so they can be done even on rest days. A 5-minute peripheral vision exercise before match games significantly improves the quality of play.
