A cross (cross) β passing from the wing of the field into the penalty area. This is a vital source of goals in football β in professional football, 20-25% of goals originate from crosses.
Types of Crosses
1. Low cross: The ball is passed on the ground or at a low height. This is the most accurate type of cross β the teammate can receive the ball more easily. A low pass from the edge of the penalty area inward is very dangerous.
2. High cross: The ball is lofted high and drops into the penalty area. Ideal for tall attackers β providing an opportunity to head the ball.
3. Early cross: Passing earlier without reaching the touchline on the wing. This catches the opponent's defense off guard.
4. Cutback: Reaching the touchline and passing backward. This pulls the goalkeeper and defenders back β a very dangerous pass.
Crossing Technique
Foot position: The supporting foot is next to the ball, slightly in front. Use the inside or the top part of the striking foot.
Body posture: Slightly leaned back (for a high cross) or straight (for a low cross).
Attention: Look at the penalty area and check your teammates' positions before passing. Do not make blind passes!
Training Methods
Target practice: Place cones in the penalty area β accurately cross the ball to the cones from various points. 20 crosses per side, 3 sets.
Crossing on the move: Dribble on the wing and finish with a cross. Combining speed with accuracy is the hardest part.
With a partner: One player crosses from the wing, while the second strikes with the head or foot in the penalty area. This simulates real game situations.
Improving Crossing Accuracy
The most important tip: lift your head and see your teammate before passing. A common mistake is looking only at the ball before the pass. Lifting the head and then passing significantly increases accuracy.
