Many footballers focus on strength and speed training while neglecting flexibility. However, one of the secrets to Ryan Giggs playing professional football until the age of 40 was his daily yoga practice.

Why is Flexibility Important?

Flexible muscles increase striking power โ€” the leg moves with a greater amplitude. The risk of injury decreases โ€” the muscle becomes prepared for unexpected stretching. Recovery accelerates โ€” good blood circulation eliminates muscle soreness faster.

Yoga Poses for Footballers

Downward Dog: Stretches the hamstrings and calf muscles. Hold for 30 seconds.

Pigeon Pose: Increases hip joint flexibility. 30 seconds per side.

Warrior I and II: Develops leg strength and balance.

Tree Pose: Improves balance โ€” standing on one leg.

Seated Forward Bend: Stretches the hamstrings and lower back muscles.

Post-Game Stretching Program

A 10-15 minute stretching routine after a game significantly reduces muscle soreness:

1. Quadriceps stretch (30 seconds per leg)

2. Hamstring stretch (30 seconds per leg)

3. Inner thigh stretch (butterfly pose for 45 seconds)

4. Calf stretch (30 seconds per leg)

5. Hip joint stretch (30 seconds per side)

6. Lower back and back stretch (45 seconds)

Yoga Training Schedule

Perform a 20-30 minute yoga session 2-3 times a week. If you search for 'Yoga for Footballers' on YouTube, you will find many free video tutorials.

On match days, perform stretching only AFTER the game. Static stretching BEFORE the game can temporarily decrease muscle strength โ€” do dynamic warm-ups instead.
