Dangerous Play and Cards in Football: The Advantage of Knowing the Rules

Knowing the rules of football is important not only for referees but also for players. A player who knows the rules understands which actions are permitted and which are forbidden — this gives them a significant advantage in the game.

When is a yellow card given?

1. Unsporting behavior: Rough play, deliberate handball (except for the goalkeeper).

2. Dissent: Opposing the referee's decision through words or actions.

3. Persistent infringement: Breaking the rules multiple times in one match.

4. Time-wasting: Deliberately wasting time, for example, a goalkeeper holding the ball for too long.

5. Distance violation: Failing to maintain the specified distance during a free kick or corner.

6. Unauthorized entry/exit: Entering or leaving the field without the referee's permission.

Red card (direct)

1. Serious foul play: A tackle that poses a danger to the opponent's health.

2. Violent conduct: Intentionally striking an opponent or any other person.

3. Spitting: Spitting at an opponent or any other person.

4. Denying a goal-scoring opportunity: Stopping a goal with the hand or bringing down an opponent as the last defender.

5. Offensive language: Using insulting, derogatory, or abusive words.

Less known rules

Throw-in: Must be thrown with both hands from behind the head, with both feet on the ground. An incorrect throw results in a throw-in for the opponent.

Back pass: If a defender passes the ball back to the goalkeeper with their foot, the goalkeeper cannot pick it up with their hands. Breaking this rule results in an indirect free kick.

Offside: If the attacker is ahead of the opponent's last defender at the moment the pass is made — it is offside. However, there is no offside on throw-ins, corners, and goal kicks.
