Dangerous Areas in Football: Strategic Points of the Pitch

Although a football pitch may look uniform, every area of it possesses its own unique strategic significance. Professional coaches analyze the field by dividing it into 'zones'. Understanding these zones is also very beneficial for amateur players.

Zone 14 — The 'Death Zone'

The central area at the edge of the penalty box is called 'Zone 14' or the 'Death Zone'. Taking a shot or delivering a through ball from here is the most dangerous action. Players like Kevin De Bruyne and Mesut Ozil are masters of this zone.

Why is it dangerous? Here, the attacker is close enough to the goal (within shooting range), and the opponent's defense has not yet fully formed. A through ball from here creates a 1v1 opportunity.

Half-spaces

The area between the wing and the center is the half-space. These areas are the weakest points of the opponent's defense because the responsibility between the center-back and the full-back is ambiguous. Receiving the ball here provides a huge advantage.

Penalty Area Corners

The corners of the penalty area are ideal spots for crossing. A ball delivered from here is the most difficult for the goalkeeper—it remains unclear whether they should come out or stay on their line.

Your Own Penalty Area

This is the most dangerous area—any foul here can lead to a penalty. Therefore, in your own penalty area: do not handle the ball, do not pull the opponent, do not slide recklessly, and try to play with your head.

Using Zones in 5x5

Dangerous areas exist even on small pitches: the center in front of the goal (for goals), the wings (for bypassing defenders), and the midline (to start counter-attacks).

Practice playing in different zones during training: in one drill, attack only from the wings; in another, only from the center. This expands your understanding of the game.
