In football, when the ball comes to you, you have an average of 1-2 seconds to make a decision. Professional footballers consider 3-4 options in this time and choose the best one. This ability is called 'football intelligence' or 'game sense'.
What is football intelligence?
It is the ability to know what to do BEFORE receiving the ball. Xavi Hernandez said about this: 'I lift my head 6 times before receiving the ball โ I know what is around me. When the ball arrives, the decision is ready.'
Factors that slow down decision-making
1. Divided attention: Walking while looking only at the ball โ not seeing teammates and opponents around.
2. Fear: The fear of making a mistake slows down decision-making.
3. Fatigue: A tired brain works slower. Physical preparation also affects mental speed.
4. Lack of experience: An inexperienced player cannot see as many options.
Quick thinking exercises
Head-up exercise: While dribbling, the coach shows different numbers โ you must say the number. This teaches playing with the head up.
Color game: Play with players wearing different colored vests. The coach calls out a color โ you must pass to the teammate of that color. This develops quick identification and decision-making.
Limited touch: Playing with 2 touches, then 1 touch. Fewer touches mean faster decision-making.
Small-sided games: 3v3 or 4v4 on a small field โ time and space are limited, so decisions must be fast.
Vision exercise
A 5-minute vision exercise before every game: dribble the ball, lifting your head every 2-3 seconds to look around. This simple exercise forms the habit of 'lifting the head' during the game.
Add one rule to your Playmatch games today: lift your head BEFORE the ball arrives. In one month, you will see that your game sense has significantly increased.
