Tactical fouling is a deliberate minor foul committed to stop a dangerous attack by the opponent. This is a controversial but widely used part of modern football. Players like Rodri, Casemiro, and Fernandinho are masters of this art.

What is tactical fouling?

It is a minor foul committed to stop an opponent's counter-attack β€” pulling a shirt, blocking their path, or a light push. The goal is to slow down the opponent's fast break and give your own team time to return to defense.

When is it used?

1. During a counter-attack: When you lose the ball and the opponent launches a fast attack β€” stopping the first ball carrier.

2. Before the danger zone: It is good to stop the opponent before they enter 'Zone 14' β€” but NEVER commit a tactical foul inside the penalty area (penalty!).

3. At the end of the game: To waste time in order to maintain a winning score.

The art of tactical fouling

A good tactical foul attracts minimal attention from the referee:

- Do not be too aggressive β€” you might receive a yellow card

- Make it look like you were attempting to play the ball

- Stop the opponent outside the penalty area

The ethical issue

There is an opinion that tactical fouling goes against the principles of Fair Play. However, this is the reality of football β€” almost all professional teams use it. The important thing is to know the limit. A foul that poses a risk to the opponent's health is NEVER acceptable.

In amateur football

When playing with friends, tactical fouling should be used with caution. There is no referee β€” therefore, control yourself. Light blocking is possible, but avoid aggressive actions. In Playmatch games, friendship is important β€” do not ruin a friendship for the sake of victory.
