Leg fractures are among the most serious injuries encountered in football. Such an injury can keep a player off the pitch for months.

Most Commonly Fractured Bones

Metatarsal bones (foot) โ€” the most common. David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, and Neymar have all experienced this injury. The tibia (shin bone) โ€” can break as a result of a rough foul. The fibula (calf bone) โ€” often occurs during twisting motions.

Causes

Direct impact โ€” a rough foul by an opponent. Stress fractures โ€” develop gradually due to excessive load. Improper landing โ€” after jumping. Fatigued muscles provide poor protection for the bones.

Prevention

Wearing quality shin guards โ€” mandatory. Sufficient intake of Calcium and Vitamin D. Exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the bone. Avoiding overtraining โ€” adhering to rest days. Avoiding risky movements when fatigued.

Preventing a bone fracture is easy โ€” but treatment is long and difficult.
