Leg fractures are among the most serious injuries encountered in football. Such an injury can keep a player off the pitch for months.
Most Commonly Fractured Bones
Metatarsal bones (foot) โ the most common. David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, and Neymar have all experienced this injury. The tibia (shin bone) โ can break as a result of a rough foul. The fibula (calf bone) โ often occurs during twisting motions.
Causes
Direct impact โ a rough foul by an opponent. Stress fractures โ develop gradually due to excessive load. Improper landing โ after jumping. Fatigued muscles provide poor protection for the bones.
Prevention
Wearing quality shin guards โ mandatory. Sufficient intake of Calcium and Vitamin D. Exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the bone. Avoiding overtraining โ adhering to rest days. Avoiding risky movements when fatigued.
Preventing a bone fracture is easy โ but treatment is long and difficult.
