Muscle cramps affect many football players, especially in the second half of the game. This painful condition sharply reduces a player's effectiveness.

Causes

The main causes are: dehydration (lack of water in the body), deficiency of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium), excessive muscle fatigue, insufficient warming up, and playing in hot weather.

Prevention

Drinking enough water is the most important measure. Drink water regularly before and during the game. Electrolyte drinks are also beneficial. Proper warm-up and cool-down exercises prepare the muscles. Consume foods rich in magnesium and potassium โ€” bananas, nuts, and vegetables.

Treatment

When a cramp starts: gently stretch the muscle (do not move quickly). Massage the painful area. Drink water or an electrolyte drink. Be cautious even after the pain subsides โ€” the muscle may cramp again. If cramps recur frequently, consult a doctor.

Prevention is easier than treatment โ€” therefore, pay attention to prophylaxis.
