A cross is an aerial ball delivered from the wing into the penalty area. According to statistics, a large portion of goals are scored via crosses. The art of delivering an accurate cross requires specific practice.
Types of Crosses
Low cross โ a pass along the ground or at a low height. Fast and precise, but easier for defenders to intercept. High cross โ lofting the ball into the penalty area. Ideal for goals scored with the head. Cut-back cross โ going all the way to the goal line and passing backward โ the most dangerous variant.
Technique
Using the inside of the foot โ more accurate, but slower. Using the laces (instep) โ powerful and fast, but less accurate. The angle of approach to the ball is important โ a 45-degree angle is ideal. The standing foot should be about 30 cm away from the ball.
Exercises
Practicing crosses to a designated point. Crossing to a moving target. Crossing in game situations โ with a defender present. It is important to practice with both feet.
A winger who can cross well is a valuable player for any team.
