A False 9 is a player who is not a traditional center-forward but plays in the striker's position. This tactic was popularized by Pep Guardiola at Barcelona with Lionel Messi in 2009 and changed modern football.

What is a False 9?

A traditional center-forward (number 9) stays near the opponent's goal and scores goals. A False 9, however, drops deep โ€” descending into the midfielder zone to receive the ball. This confuses the opponent's central defenders.

Why is it effective?

The opposing center-back faces a dilemma: should they follow the attacker or stay in their zone? If they follow, a gap opens up in the center of the defense. If they stay, the False 9 receives the ball freely and plays.

Famous False 9 Players

Lionel Messi (Barcelona, 2009-2012): Guardiola moved Messi from a central striker to a False 9. The result was one of the strongest attacking lines in football history.

Roberto Firmino (Liverpool): In Klopp's system, Firmino performed the role of a classic False 9 โ€” he wasn't just a goalscorer, but a creator of space for Salah and Mane.

Antoine Griezmann: He has shown great results in the False 9 position at Atletico Madrid and with the French national team.

Required Qualities for a False 9

1. Ball Control: The ability to receive and hold the ball while dropping deep.

2. Vision: Seeing the movement of teammates around them and delivering the right pass.

3. Intelligent Movement: Knowing when to drop deep and when to run forward.

4. Finishing: A confident strike when a goal-scoring opportunity arises.

False 9 in 5x5

The False 9 concept can be applied on small pitches: instead of the attacker always staying forward, they should drop into the middle to receive the ball. This confuses opposing defenders and creates open space for other players. Try this tactic in your Playmatch games!
