A chip shot (lob) is a technique of lifting the ball off the ground and sending it into the goal over the goalkeeper. This is one of the most beautiful types of goals in football, and performing it requires delicate technique, correct timing, and great confidence.
When is a chip shot needed?
1. When the goalkeeper comes forward: When the goalkeeper rushes toward you โ a chip over them is the ideal option.
2. In 1v1 situations: When facing the goalkeeper one-on-one, as they close in on you โ a chip shot is effective.
3. When spotting the goalkeeper's position from afar: Sometimes from 25-30 meters, you see that the goalkeeper is standing far from their line โ this is an opportunity for a chip shot.
Chip Shot Technique
Strike point: Strike the BOTTOM part of the ball. Cut under the ball with your toes โ this gives the ball backspin.
Foot movement: A powerful and sharp strike is not needed. Use a soft and precise movement โ 'scoop' the ball.
Body position: Lean slightly backward โ this helps the ball lift.
Power control: The hardest part is calculating the correct power. Too strong โ the ball flies over the goal. Too weak โ the goalkeeper catches it.
Famous Chip Goals
Messi vs Bayern Munich (2015): When Neuer came forward, Messi scored with a light chip โ this goal was recognized as the most beautiful goal of that year.
Totti vs Manchester United: A chip shot from halfway โ goalkeeper Van der Sar could do nothing.
Training Methods
Chip to a cone: Place a cone in front of the goal (acting as the goalkeeper) and aim for the goal over the cone with a chip shot from 12-15 meters. 20 shots, 3 sets.
Chip on the move: Dribble forward and then perform a chip shot. This simulates a real game situation.
Various distances: Practice chip shots from 8m, 12m, 18m, and 25m โ each distance requires different power.
