The football is the most important piece of equipment in the game. Over 150 years, it has transformed from a leather sphere into an ultra-modern technological device. This evolution has changed the game of football itself.
Early Balls (1860-1930)
The very first footballs were made from pig or cow bladders β their shapes were irregular. In 1855, Charles Goodyear created the first rubber ball. In 1863, the shape and size of the ball were defined in the first official rules of football.
The Era of Leather Balls (1930-1970)
With the start of the World Cups, the quality of the balls improved. However, leather balls absorbed water in the rain and became very heavy β sometimes up to twice their weight. Heading the ball was even dangerous. A special ball was developed for every World Cup.
Telstar β The Symbol of the Football (1970)
The Adidas Telstar β a black-and-white 32-panel ball β is the most famous football design. It was created for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The black pentagons were added to make it easier to see the ball on television.
Modern Balls (2000-Present)
Jabulani (2010): The most controversial ball. Consisting of 8 panels β its aerodynamics differed from expectations. Goalkeepers stated that this ball was difficult to control.
Brazuca (2014): Consisting of 6 panels, it was much better received than the Jabulani.
Al Rihla (2022): The Qatar World Cup ball. It set a record as the fastest-flying ball. Inside is a sensor chip β it determines the ball's position for the VAR system.
