With the arrival of the winter season, many people stop exercising; however, for those who maintain a healthy lifestyle, cold air becomes an additional challenge. At low temperatures, muscles and joints contract and lose their elasticity, which increases the risk of unexpected injuries, strains, and tears. To move safely in cold weather, the following recommendations should be followed.
The first and most important rule is long-term warm-up exercises. While a 5-10 minute warm-up may be sufficient in summer, more time should be allocated in winter to "wake up" the muscles. Body temperature should be raised and blood circulation improved through light jogging, joint rotations, and dynamic stretching. It is recommended to move to main loads only after the muscles are fully warmed up.
Pay special attention to choosing clothing. The "layered dressing" principle is considered the most effective: synthetic undergarments that protect the skin from moisture, a middle layer that retains heat, and outer clothing that protects against wind. If muscles cool down, they stiffen, and even one small wrong movement can cause a serious injury. Additionally, choosing warm and non-slip footwear for the feet prevents falls.
Do not forget to maintain water balance. In cold weather, the sensation of thirst decreases, but the body still needs moisture. Dehydrated muscles tire faster and become prone to injury. Therefore, it is recommended to drink warm water in small portions during and after training.
Finally, after finishing your workout, perform a "cool-down" stage. Slow movements and static stretches remove tension from the muscles and speed up the recovery process.
In conclusion, physical activity in cold winter weather is not harmful, provided that you take precautions and are kind to your body. Proper warming up, quality clothing, and sufficient water are the golden rules of winter sports.
