In modern football, pressing is a team's attempt to immediately win back the ball after losing it. This tactic is widely used by coaches such as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola and has become an integral part of today's game.
What is Pressing?
Pressing is a strategy of applying high pressure on the opponent when they have possession, forcing them to make mistakes and winning the ball back. This is a collective action involving the entire team, not just one player.
Types of Pressing
High Press: Pressure is applied near the opponent's goal. This is the most aggressive form, preventing the opponent from playing out from the back. Liverpool and Manchester City frequently use this method.
Mid Press: The team waits in the middle of the pitch and begins applying pressure once the opponent brings the ball into the center. This allows for energy conservation.
Low Block (Low Pressing): The team sets up a deep defense near their own goal. This is a strategy designed for counter-attacks.
How to Practice Pressing?
For pressing to be effective, team members must sense each other's movements. In training, playing 5v5 or 6v6 games on small pitches and implementing a rule to win the ball back within 5 seconds of losing it is very effective.
It is important for every player to know their zone and apply pressure to the opponent's weakest point. Usually, the opponent's left or right defender is relatively weaker β pressing is directed specifically toward that side.
Endurance in Pressing
Pressing requires a great deal of energy. Therefore, maintaining high pressing for 90 minutes is difficult. Many teams apply intensive pressing in the first 15-20 minutes of the game and at the start of the second half, switching to a mid press for the remaining time.
To increase endurance, interval running exercises, shuttle runs, and intensive games on small pitches are recommended.
Practical Tips
You can book a pitch via Playmatch and conduct pressing drills with your friends. Practicing pressing on small pitches (5v5) is the most effective method. Holding a special pressing session at least once a week will significantly improve your team's game.
