In modern football, the most goals are scored during transitions β that is, when a team is moving from attack to defense or vice versa.
Positive Transition (Defense to Attack)
As soon as the ball is won β look forward. The first 5 seconds are the most important β the opponent has not yet organized. Pass quickly or dribble fast. Forwards must immediately run into depth. The goal is to reach the goal before the opponent's defense takes shape.
Negative Transition (Attack to Defense)
After losing the ball β think about defense immediately. Gegenpressing β attempting to win the ball back instantly. Or returning quickly to defense β organizing positions. The most important thing is not to get caught in between.
Training
Transitions occur most frequently in small-sided games. A 4v4+3 (3 neutral players) game is ideal for practicing transitions. Set a rule to press immediately for 3 seconds when the ball is lost.
Transition requires fast thinking and fast movement β it is the most dynamic part of football.
