If you listen to a professional football match, you will hear players talking constantly: 'Behind you!', 'Time!', 'Left!', 'Give it!'. This communication is an integral part of team play and one of the keys to victory.

Why is communication important?

A footballer can only look in one direction at a time. However, danger can come from any side. A teammate's warning 'Behind you!' prevents the loss of possession.

Key communication phrases

'Time!' or 'You have time!' โ€” The opponent is not close when you receive the ball; you can turn and play.

'Behind you!' โ€” An opponent is coming from behind; play quickly.

'Give it!' โ€” Pass to me, I am in open space.

'Hold it!' โ€” Keep the ball, I am coming.

'Left!' / 'Right!' โ€” There is open space on that side.

'Push up!' โ€” Move the defensive line forward (offside trap).

'Close him down!' โ€” Mark the opponent more closely.

Goalkeeper communication

The goalkeeper must be the best communicator because they can see the entire pitch:

- 'Mine!' โ€” I will take the ball coming through the air

- 'Throw it!' โ€” throw the ball to me

- Correcting the positions of the defenders

Communication in amateur football

In many amateur groups, players play in silence โ€” this is a big mistake. Speak out loud! It may feel uncomfortable at first, but after a few games, it becomes a habit and the quality of the game increases sharply.

Set a rule in your Playmatch group: everyone should try to speak on the pitch. This simple change significantly improves teamwork.
