The turning (turn) technique is when a player with the ball pivots away from an opponent to move in a new direction. This skill is especially important for midfielders and forwards โ€” when receiving the ball with your back to the opponent, a quick turn provides a significant advantage.

Types of Turns

1. Cruyff Turn: Discovered by Johan Cruyff, this technique involves feigning a shot and pushing the ball behind the standing leg in the opposite direction. This is one of the most popular and effective turns.

2. Drag Back: Pulling the ball back under the foot to make a 180-degree turn. Simple, yet very effective.

3. Inside Hook: Using the inside of the foot to hook the ball and turn. Effective in tight spaces.

4. Outside Hook: Pushing the ball in another direction using the outside of the foot and turning.

5. Roulette (Zidane Turn): Passing by while rotating 360 degrees over the ball. Very beautiful and effective โ€” Zidane was a master of this technique.

When to Perform a Turn?

Situations where turning is most effective:

- When receiving the ball with your back to the opponent

- In tight spaces when an opponent is applying pressure

- When you want to quickly change the direction of the attack

Training Methods

Perform individual turning exercises for 10-15 minutes every day:

1. By a wall: pass to the wall and receive the returning ball with a turn.

2. With cones: dribble toward a cone, perform a turn in front of it, and return.

3. With a partner: a partner applies pressure from behind, and you escape using a turn.

Safety

Ensure there is no excessive load on the knee during turns โ€” perform them only with the correct technique. Do not bend the knee inward and ensure your footing is secure โ€” there is a risk of slipping on wet pitches.
