Urbanization and the Disappearance of Street Football: Causes and Solutions

Once, every neighborhood had its own "stadium" — meaning a dusty field or simply a goal made between two stones. Street football served not only as physical activity but also as a school that shaped social communication, leadership, and team spirit for children. However, today, along with the process of urbanization, this culture is slowly disappearing.

The main reason is the densification of urban infrastructure. Multi-story houses and commercial buildings are being constructed in place of empty yards and squares. As a result of the increase in the number of cars, the alleys where children once ran have now become parking lots. Furthermore, the introduction of digital technologies and video games is attracting children more to the virtual world than to physical activity.

The disappearance of street football is not just a decline in sports, but a healthcare issue. Physical inactivity is leading to obesity and weakened eyesight among youth. Additionally, children are being deprived of important social skills such as resolving real-life conflicts, communicating, and accepting victory and defeat.

A systematic approach is required to solve this problem. First, "green zones" and small sports grounds must be mandatorily planned in urban development projects. Safe areas where children can freely kick a ball must be created in every quarter.

Second, local governments and community organizations should bring children back to the streets by organizing small tournaments. Equipping sports grounds with modern synthetic coatings not only prevents injuries but also improves the quality of the game and sparks interest.

In conclusion, urbanization is an unstoppable process, but it should not swallow the simplicity and health of childhood. Bringing back street football is not just about restoring a game, but investing in the physical and mental health of future generations.
