The scorching days of summer lead not only to physical fatigue but also to a slowdown in mental activity. Many of us have noticed that it becomes harder to concentrate in the heat or that we spend more time on simple tasks. Scientifically, this condition is explained by a temporary decline in cognitive functions. There is an optimal temperature range for the human body. When the temperature rises excessively, the brain directs its primary energy toward ensuring body thermoregulation (the cooling system). As a result, the prefrontal cortex โ€” the area responsible for planning, logical thinking, and controlling impulsivity โ€” does not receive sufficient resources. This leads to an increase in cognitive load and a decrease in work efficiency. The most dangerous consequence of cognitive decline is the increase in tactical errors. Tactical errors usually arise not from a failure to understand the strategic goal, but as a result of carelessness in managing the process or making decisions at the wrong time. In hot weather, a person enters a state of "cognitive tunneling": they focus only on the most immediate problem and forget to analyze the overall situation. For example, in sports games or business negotiations, the intensification of emotions and the weakening of logic lead to taking the wrong step. Furthermore, heat leads to dehydration (lack of fluids). If the water supply to brain cells is disrupted, inter-neuronal communication slows down. This results in a decrease in reaction speed and a weakening of memory functions. Consequently, a person makes simple technical or logical errors that they would not normally commit. There are several simple tactics to prevent these situations: first, maintain regular water balance; second, schedule the most complex and intelligent decisions for the cooler parts of the day; and third, take short breaks to refocus attention. In conclusion, hot weather temporarily sets "limits" on our intellectual capabilities. Recognizing this and organizing a work schedule accordingly is the most effective way to minimize cognitive errors.
