Light and Color in Football: Pitch Markings and Kit Colors

The markings on a football pitch and the colors of players' kits are not random — they are determined by rules and traditions.

Pitch Markings

All lines must be white and their width must not exceed 12 cm. The radius of the center circle is 9.15 meters. The penalty area is 16.5 x 40.3 meters. The 6-meter zone is 5.5 x 18.3 meters. The radius of the corner arc is 1 meter. These dimensions are the same worldwide.

Kit Colors

The kits of the two teams must be distinct — so that the referee and spectators can easily tell them apart. The goalkeeper's kit must be different from those of the other players. The referee also wears a separate color — usually black or a bright color.

History of Kit Design

Early football kits were simple colored shirts. Modern kits are made from lightweight, breathable materials and have an aerodynamic design. Kit sales are a major source of income for clubs — the Barcelona kit generates over 100 million in revenue per year.
