A set-piece coach is a specialist coach for standard situations (corners, free kicks, throw-ins). The importance of this profession is growing, as statistics show that 25-30 percent of goals are scored from set pieces.

What does a set-piece coach do?

1. In Attack: Develops special tactics for corners and free kicks. An individual approach to each opponent β€” studying the opponent's weaknesses via video and creating specific movement plans.

2. In Defense: Defensive tactics against the opponent's set pieces. Zonal defense, man-marking, or a hybrid system.

3. Training: Conducts special set-piece training sessions 2-3 times a week.

Famous Set-Piece Successes

Brentford FC: The team that scored the most goals from set pieces in the Premier League during the 2023-2024 season. Their set-piece training has been specifically recognized.

Liverpool (2019): In the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, 2 of the 4 goals were scored from corners β€” a result of meticulous preparation.

Simple but Effective Corner Tactics

1. Short corner trap: Playing a short corner to distract the opponent and delivering a cross from another angle.

2. Near post flick: A player at the near post flicks the ball with their head toward the far post.

3. Decoy run: One player draws away the opposing defender, creating open space for another teammate.

For Amateur Teams

Develop at least 3-4 corner tactics for your group and practice them once a week. Establish a signaling system: raised hand = near post, down = far post, two hands = short corner. In playmatch games, these tactics can bring victory!
