In defensive tactics, there are two main approaches: zonal defense and man-to-man marking. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Zonal Defense
Each defender guards a specific area rather than a specific player. Advantage: defenders are strong in their own zone, maintain correct positioning, and expend less energy. Disadvantage: gaps between zones can be exploited, and responsibility may become unclear.
Man-to-man Marking
Each defender tracks one specific opposing player. Advantage: clear responsibility, making it easier to keep dangerous players under control. Disadvantage: more energy is consumed; if one defender is beaten, the entire system can collapse, and confusion arises if opposing players switch positions.
Modern Approach
Most modern teams use a hybrid system: general zonal defense, but with the most dangerous opposing players being marked man-to-man. This combines the best aspects of both systems.
The choice of defensive system should be adjusted based on the opponent and your own team's strengths.
