According to football statistics, approximately 30 percent of all goals are scored from set pieces. Corner kicks are considered one of the most important types of set pieces. However, many amateur teams do not develop a specific tactic for corners.
Types of Corner Kicks
Inswinger: The ball curves toward the goal. This is the most common type, making it easier to hit the ball with the head.
Outswinger: The ball curves away from the goal. Effective for distracting defenders.
Short corner: The ball is passed to a nearby teammate. This is used to disrupt the defense's organization.
Near post corner: The ball is delivered to the near post, closer to the corner flag.
Positioning During Corners
During a corner, 5-6 players should enter the penalty area. Each of them must have a specific position:
1. Near post player β for flicking or redirecting the ball
2. Far post player β to recover the ball if it goes past others
3. Central attackers β for scoring headers
4. Penalty spot player β to strike the ball if it drops
Training Methods
Corner drills should be conducted at least twice a week. Each time, practice 15-20 corner kicks using different tactics. The most important thing is to establish a signaling system. For example, a raised hand means an inswinger, and a lowered hand means a short corner.
Defending Corners
Defense is also critical during corners. There are zonal defense and man-marking methods. In zonal defense, each player guards a specific area. In man-marking, each defender follows one opposing attacker.
Many professional teams use a hybrid of both β some players stay in zones, while others personally mark dangerous attackers.
