Free Kick Wall in Football: Proper Setup and Defense

In free kick situations, setting up the wall correctly is vital for goal safety. Many goals are scored due to an incorrectly positioned wall.

Number of Players in the Wall

Up to the 18-meter line: 1-2 people. Around the penalty area boundary: 3-4 people. Inside the penalty area: 4-5 people. The wall should cover the near post — the goalkeeper controls the far post.

Wall Setup Technique

The tallest player in the wall stands closest to the ball striker. Players should stand shoulder-to-shoulder, tightly packed. Jumping is not as important — blocking the ball with the feet is more common. According to the rules, the wall must be at least 9.15 meters away from the ball.

Offensive Approach

The team taking the free kick may place their own player in front of the wall — this obstructs the goalkeeper's view. The ball can be directed over, around, or under the wall. Having two players stand at the free kick spot to distract the opponent is also an effective tactic.
