Analytics in Football: xG and Other Modern Statistical Indicators

Football analytics has developed significantly over the last decade. Now, not only goals and assists, but complex statistical indicators are also used to evaluate the game.

What is xG (Expected Goals)?

xG is the expected goals model. It calculates the probability of a goal for every shot. For example, the xG value for a penalty is 0.76, meaning that out of every 100 penalties, 76 will be goals. A shot from the center of the pitch might equal 0.02 xG. This indicator is very useful in assessing a team's true strength.

Other Indicators

xA (Expected Assists) measures the probability of a pass leading to a goal. PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) shows the intensity of a team's pressing. Progressive passes refer to the number of passes that move the ball forward. Together, these indicators provide a complete picture of the game.
