Football and Diplomacy: Peace Through Sport

Football has been used as a diplomatic tool several times in history. The Christmas Truce of 1914 — a football match between British and German soldiers during World War I — is the most famous example. In 1998, when Iran and the USA played in the World Cup, political relations between the two countries were very tense, yet the game took place in a friendly atmosphere.

Through the "Football for Peace" program, FIFA promotes football as a tool for peace in conflict zones. There are joint football programs in the Israel-Palestine conflict region. South and North Korea formed a unified football team in 2018. This demonstrates the power of football to transcend political borders.

Uzbekistan also actively participates in football diplomacy. Friendly matches with Central Asian countries and academy exchanges with neighboring nations all strengthen relations through football. Sport is the most universal language, capable of uniting people even without words.
